Each February, San Antonio proudly celebrates Black History Month, honoring the rich contributions of Black Americans to our city and nation. From the Civil Rights Movement to modern-day achievements, this is a time to reflect, learn, and celebrate the legacy of Black heritage.

While San Antonio embraces and honors Black culture year-round, February offers a special opportunity to dive deeper into the stories, history, and achievements that have shaped our community. From art exhibitions and film screenings to guided tours and more, there are countless ways to connect with and explore Black history and culture in the Alamo City.

Here are some meaningful ways to celebrate Black History Month in San Antonio:

Black History Film Series: "Miles of Smiles"


When: February 7, 2025
Where:  Carver Community Cultural Center

Catch February's installment of the San Antonio African American Community Archive & Museum (SAAACAM) Black History Film Series featuring "Miles of Smiles." This film explores the unique and complex position of Pullman porters within the luxurious sleeping-car train system. While regarded with high status in the Black community, these workers occupied the lowest rank aboard the train. Be sure to stay after the show for a panel discussion.

This event is free, but registration is required. 

 

Black History River Tour


When: Two Chances: February 8, 2025 and February 15, 2025
Where: The San Antonio River Walk

Hosted by the San Antonio African American Community Archive & Museum (SAAACAM), the Black History River Tour is a narrated 100-minute cruise through the heart of San Antonio, where you have the chance to learn about San Antonio's incredible Black History. Known to sell out quickly, be sure to get your tickets for this one ASAP!

 

Black Cowboys: An American Story


When: On view through February 9, 2025
Where: Witte Museum

Visit the Witte Museum to explore an inspiring exhibit featuring artifacts, photos, and documents that celebrate the legacy of Black cowboys. Uncover stories of their incredible skill, resilience, and the strength they showed in overcoming adversity.

 

John Coleman & Anthony Edwards Exhibit at The Carver Gallery

Where: Carver Community Cultural Center

Explore John Coleman’s vivid acrylic portraits, capturing moments in African American life, and Anthony C. Edwards’ self-taught works, inspired by a profound appreciation for African American art. These exhibitions offer a powerful connection to Black heritage and history.
